split peas
2-3 slices bacon
1/2 to 1 cup chopped onion
1/2 to 1 cup chopped carrots (optional)
1 tbsp minced garlic
4-1/2 cups chicken broth
9-1/2 ounces split peas

Put bacon in pot over medium heat and render. Once bacon fat has melted, saute onions, carrots, and garlic. After a few minutes, add the broth and split peas.

Bring to a boil, them turn to low and simmer covered for approximately 45 minutes. Once split peas are sort of mushy and falling apart, attack with stick blender to make a smooth puree. Serve with bread.
